The Val di Noto is the territory of eastern Sicily, which geographically corresponds to the southern tip of the island, located between the province of Ragusa, Syracuse and the provinces of Caltanissetta and Catania. Of all the cities of the Val di Noto, the towns of Caltagirone, Militello Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli in 2002 joined the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the Sicilian Baroque . They are also being added in the historical centers of the towns of Acireale in Catania, Ispica in the province of Ragusa and Mazarin in the province of Caltanissetta.

Note that "Val" in this case is not going to "Valley" but the valleys, the names of geographical units in which Sicily was divided into Arab-Norman era: together with the Val di Noto in fact there were and the Val di Mazara Val Demone.

The particularity of this "identity" common in cities, mainly due to an admirable reconstruction after the earthquake occurred in the Val di Noto in 1693. For there are wonderful examples of late Baroque art and architecture are referred to a moment of synthesis, has major urban planning and architectural character of homogeneity.

Given these characteristics, the circuit of the cities of Val di Noto was entered in the register of UNESCO. This important achievement is having a positive economic impact throughout the area, compared with an increase in tourist numbers in the area and for the emergence of multiple accommodations.

However, to threaten the integrity of the landscape there is the attempt by a Texas oil company, to launch a series of projects to extract oil from the ground. This request is incompatible with its aspirations tourist was initially supported by the Sicily Region and subsequently blocked by the then Regional Councillor Fabio Granata in 2003. Currently, the company still decided to pursue his project, did initially appeal to the TAR of Sicily, then announced the "stop" to drilling, but this decision is still contested by environmentalists because the firm covers part of the territory concerned .
